How Instructional Rounds Are Initiated

By Frances Long

Multiple methods can be adopted to instill pedagogical skills in teachers. For example, instructional rounds can be adopted to help educators to learn from one another. This method proves to be efficient especially for those who teach in the same school. It is widely used in most schools these days to foster learning and academic success of students. This method can be initiated in multiple ways.

It is mandatory for educators to be part of this exercise every semester for the sake of their careers. School heads should initiate this program because it is aimed at transforming the manner in which educators and students interact in class. This exercise should also be commenced by lead teachers. School heads can take the role of lead teachers because of their experience in leadership.

The next step is to select a group of teachers who will take turns to observe how their colleagues deliver in class. An educator can volunteer to participate or can be chosen by a school administrator. Those who are chosen are required to have enhanced the academic performance of students in classrooms. Their main objective of participating in this endeavor is to gain skills that will further their teaching career.

As the exercise begins, teachers need to form teams comprising of five members. They are also required to make an appearance in classrooms when teaching is ongoing in teams. These teams are used to observe how one educator guides students through an academic syllabus. Furthermore, the observed teacher needs to notify learners that other teachers will be visiting the class.

Observing teachers are required to knock quietly at the classroom doors when they arrive. They are also expected to sit at the back. These educators should take notes and observe how their fellow teacher guides students through an academic lesson. For example, they can examine how a teacher communicates with students when a lesson is ongoing. The observation session takes about ten minutes. During this duration, they should also record everything that they have heard and seen in the classroom. Once the duration is over, the observing group leaves the room after thanking students and the teacher.

Team members usually convene to discuss their observations and experience while they were in class. Every member is given a chance to comment and this procedure is initiated by a lead teacher. Team members are also taken through debriefing by a lead teacher. During the debriefing, they are required not to discuss their observations with individuals who do not belong to their team.

This technique is effective in developing the teaching methodologies of educators. This is because they get to observe how their colleagues instruct and disseminate knowledge to students in classrooms. Furthermore, teachers are capable of applying these skills when handling their students. The main objective of this technique is to develop teaching careers as well as increasing academic performance in schools.

Another lesson that educators can learn from this technique socialism and how to be positive. As teachers converge in a classroom to assess their colleague, they are motivated by how their fellow educators handle students. They also get the chance to interact with their colleagues and learn several teaching approaches.
