The Overall Importance Of Ocean Conservation

By Nancy Russell

When it comes to conserving natural resources there are several areas which are in need of assistance. One of the most important of which is that of Ocean Conservation. While there are many organizations currently working in this area, many are more efficient at getting things done than others. As such, before giving to any non-profit, it is good to know the facts, goals, purpose and priorities of the organization.

Two of the most integral organizations working in this area are the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Council. Both of which have a number of staff and volunteers working in this area. In addition, each non-profit has a purpose along with a set of priorities and goals related to conserving the oceanic environment in order to sustain life on a world wide basis. As such, there are also a number of universities offering degree programs in these areas.

While both of these non-profits work to save valuable resources, each organization has its own goals, priorities and purpose. For example, while the marine council is more concerned with the biological aspects of marine life, the conservancy works to save the overall environment which is essential to the survival of humans, sea life and wildlife in different areas of the world.

Both the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Council have been around for quite some time. As such, both are often well respected by agency, corporate, government and private donors. For, while both have different yet similar goals, the ultimate priority is to save valuable natural resources which are necessary in sustaining a multitude of life forms.

Neither of these non-profits could have achieved these goals or will be able to continue without the assistance of donations from corporations and individuals around the world. Donations which have already assisted in making valuable progress when it comes to combating climate change, eliminating acidification in the ocean and restoring the Gulf of Mexico with the best available science and technology to date.

The Marine Council has helped to spearhead efforts in replenishing what was at once endangered species such as the sea turtle. In addition, the agency is responsible for designating and strengthening marine sanctuaries so that these efforts can continue over time. Many volunteers associated with the council are also part of other non-profits which work to clean up coastal waterways as well as international coastlines.

With regards to both of these non-profits and others, it is often the volunteers and staff who do the hardest work. For, going out into the field, surveying and tracking while cleaning and moving endangered species is often a difficult and timely process. However, as the ocean also supplies water, food and air to a number of different communities, this work is also essential in saving humankind.

While success is an ongoing endeavor, these agencies have seen great progress over the years when it comes conserving oceanic resources. For example, over one hundred forty four thousand pounds of trash have been removed from various coastal waterways and coastlines. Whereas, millions of paid as well as volunteer jobs have been created over the years. However, as litter continues to build and many jobs have been lost over the years, work in this area remains an ongoing and necessary process.
