Useful Facts About Vas Deferens Surgery

By Kenneth Wright

The surgery of the vas deferens is also known as vasectomy. It is a simple surgery that is done at the office of the doctor or from hospital. The vas deferens are cut and blocked off such that sperms are not able to pass. It is a procedure that is quick and one is able to get home on the same day. When it comes to vas deferens surgery it is important to know what the procedure involves.

Sperms are usually made in the testicles. They leave testicles through small tubes that are known as the vas deferens, after which it mixes with other fluids to make semen. Sperms within the semen are able to cause pregnancy when they get into the vagina. With the surgical procedure, there is blocking or cutting of the tubes to keep off sperms. The sperms will then stay within testicles and are absorbed into the body.

This is among the most effective procedures that are used for birth control. It is one that is almost 100 percent effective when it comes to prevention of pregnancies. Nevertheless, it is not effective straight after surgery. It takes about three months for semen to be free of all sperms. Some months after the procedure is done, there will be a test called semen analysis done by the doctor. It is done to check if some sperms are still in semen. For the process, one is expected to ejaculate in a cup to collect the required sample.

It is a very effective method because of the fact that it is designed to work on a permanent basis. As a result, people that decide to go for it will need to make informed decisions. It is however possible that the ends of the tubes that were cut can start to grow again. Effectively, this would mean one is able to make a woman pregnant. The re-growing of the tubes is usually rare.

The procedure is generally safe and few people if any get any complications. Like all other surgeries however, there are possible risks. Some of the possible side effects include bleeding, blood in semen, swelling and infections on the site of surgery. For some people there might be build up of fluid within testicles after some time. This causes a dull ache which gets worse when one ejaculates.

Whereas it could be possible to have the procedure reversed, it will mean there is no guarantee that it will work out. The reversal procedure is very complicated and costly also. In many cases, it will be ineffective. The surgery is not a good option for people that opt for it to solve such temporary problems as sex issues.

As regards sex, one is able to start having sex after a few days following the procedure. There are those that wait longer. For those that find it uncomfortable having sex, it would be better to wait until a later date. It should be remembered that the procedure does not prevent pregnancy immediately.

The cost of the surgical procedure is varied. It will depend on where one gets it and whether or not they have insurance. It is considerably cheaper than female sterilization procedures.
