Music, Theater And Other Performance Space Austin

By Karen Murray

As most performers know, it can often be hard to find a place to present a dance performance, play music or put on a play. It can often be even harder to find available performance space Austin. For, the capitol city has gone through a great deal of redevelopment over the last several decades. As a result, several historic venues have been lost in the process.

One reason it is so difficult to locate a venue at which to host an event or perform is due to the ongoing redevelopment the city has been seeing now for decades. For, a number of historic venues which had presented comedy, music, poetry and theater have all been torn down to make way for multi-million dollar condominiums and high dollar shopping districts. As such, those having performed in the past often have a much more difficult time locating places at which to perform in the present.

Still, for those who enjoy the performing arts and the lucky few whom can afford to rent space, or acquire residencies at those still left, those remaining are some of the best in the world. Whether looking to attend community theater or a world class performance, there are still spaces left in the capitol city that host events and often draw record crowds.

While few and far between, open venues include Austin City Limits Live, a multi-story concert venue with an art gallery. The venue hosts major acts and up and coming musicians on a regular basis. With a close connection to KGSR 93.3, a local radio station, the venue also supports a number of live public and private broadcasts throughout the year.

The Long Center is most likely the second most popular venue featuring a number of musicals, plays and concerts throughout the year. The venue is reported to have some of the best acoustics in the Austin area. As the center is home to Austin's art groups, including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera and Ballet Austin, individuals can often purchase single or season tickets.

While located on the University of Texas campus, Bass Performance Hall often sells out every performance whether a concert, musical or play. The film and theater department also host a number of events at the all during the school year. At other times, the dance department might be using the space for recitals or to present a seasonal dance concert.

Sky Candy is a much smaller venue in the center of the city. Being that it is a much smaller venue, the owners often host aerial scarf classes, pole dancing classes and other community events. Whereas, individuals and groups can rent space to host a variety of events and productions when space is available.

Some other performance spaces in or near Austin include, the Round Rock Performing Arts Center which hosts a number of concerts and the Zachary Scott Theater, which is most likely one of the longest running community theaters based in the city. The Zachary Scott generally presents a number of plays and productions on a year round basis. Lastly, when perusing the local entertainment area of 6th Street, Esther's Follies offers a performance which is often unforgettable. Often based on current events and politics, the players at this long run comedic theater take audiences on a trip of laughter akin to no other.
