Human behaviour is, to a large extent, influenced by wants and needs. Everyone in the world, whether rich or poor, will find a reason to wake in the morning in search of the desires of their hearts. Indeed, these desires are widely varied depending on individual circumstances. Abraham Maslow created what is referred to us the hierarchy of needs that are often represented in form of a pyramid. Self actualization is at the top of this pyramid. There are a number of characteristics on persons that have achieved self actualization Nyack residents may wish to know.

As a way of definition, self actualization refers to the full realization of the creative, social and intellectual potential of an individual. It is a personalized process because each individual is endowed with different abilities. To get to this peak of the pyramid, one must first meet a number of personal needs. These include their physiological, safety, love and belonging and self esteem needs.

Just a few people get to self actualize because the majority have very many things to worry about. For those that manage to get to this level, there are a number of common attributes that have been observed. One of these attributes is that they have extraordinary courage. Unlike most people, they are not afraid to venture into unfamiliar territories which helps them achieve more than the ordinary individual.

Having a purpose makes the journey to actualization a lot easier. A purpose is simply a personal mission that one aims to accomplish while still on earth. The desire to get to the peak may be largely personal but a good mission is one that aims at improving the life of mankind in general. Once an individual identify their mission, everything should be geared towards its achievement.

It is important for the individual that is working towards actualization to learn self acceptance. They should understand that every individual is unique in their own right with a mix of strengths and weaknesses. Instead of hoping to be similar to another individual, they should be content with how they were created and focus on getting the best out of themselves. This notwithstanding, it should be emphasized that the individual needs to get rid of negative acquired attributes whenever possible.

Everyone needs a vision in life. Without a vision one can never what their destination is and therefore, they will have no motivation to keep getting better. While marching towards a state of actualization, one will be confronted with numerous distractions which have the potential to derail an individual from their ultimate goal. The vision is the compass that brings them back to the right path.

One should focus on personal growth rather than merely the satisfaction of needs. Personal growth often comes in small improvements in skills and knowledge every day. With time, these small improvements move an individual closer to perfection. One should be grateful for the small victories received from time to time and use this as a motivation to keep achieving more and more.

Actualization is the pinnacle need whose attainment is a journey. One only gets to this point when they maximize their potential while doing the best of what they can do. One can never use another individual as a reference for what it means to reach this peak. The different genetic characteristics and the variations in our environment shape our perception of what this pinnacle need is.
